Question by intothefort: I have a Troy Bilt snow thrower with a Tecumseh 5.5 hp engine. Engine wont start key is in new gas and plug??
The engine wont fire at all. Anyone have any suggestions.I have choked it, turned choke off emptied gas out and bought brand new. Thrower is 1 year old. I only used it once last year and it started fine. I replaced spark plug. There is no fuel shut off valve.

rust in the valves will keep them from moving. Remove the spark plug, spray WD40 into the engine turn it over spray again, turn it over again. Replace the plug, Spray starting fluid into the carb. And start and blow snow.

How do I fix my snow thrower starting problem?

Question by Kerri L: How do I fix my snow thrower starting problem?
I have a Troy-Bilt model 5521 Squall which is less than two years old and is gas powered. In attempt to electric start it, instead of the engine turning over it just makes a scraping type noise. With manual start it runs for a few seconds, then stops. It started fine a few days ago.

The mechanism that actually engages the teeth on the flywheel, lifts up on a thread. If moisture gets in there it will begin to rust and prevent the mechanism from being flung up. Take the shroud off of the motor. There should be a black plastic/rubber tip on the end of the starter. Remove that and spray the shaft with WD-40 and work it. After you get it freed up, put it back together, that should fix the electric start problem. As far as the engine itself running and stopping, maybe you got some water in your tank. Loosen the bowl nut and let some gas run out then tighten it back up. Hopefully these two things will solve your problems.
